Effective Hamiltonians for Atoms in Very Strong Magnetic Fields

چکیده

We propose three effective Hamiltonians which approximate atoms in very strong homogeneous magnetic fields B modelled by the Pauli Hamiltonian, with fixed total angular momentum with respect to magnetic field axis. All three Hamiltonians describe N electrons and a fixed nucleus where the Coulomb interaction has been replaced by B-dependent one-dimensional effective (vector valued) potentials but without magnetic field. Two of them are solvable in at least the one electron case. We briefly sketch how these Hamiltonians can be used to analyse the bottom of the spectrum of such atoms.

Calculations for Atoms and Diatomic Molecules in Strong Magnetic and Static Electric Fields

Fully numerical mesh solutions of 2D quantum equations of Schrödinger and Hartree-Fock type allow us to work with wavefunctions which possess a very flexible geometry. This flexibility is especially important for calculations of atoms and molecules in strong external fields where neither the external field nor the internal interactions can be considered as a perturbation. The applications of th...

Magnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms

Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...

Interaction-dependent photon-assisted tunneling in optical lattices: a quantum simulator of strongly-correlated electrons and dynamical gauge fields

We introduce a scheme that combines photon-assisted tunneling by a moving optical lattice with strong Hubbard interactions, and allows for the quantum simulation of paradigmatic quantum many-body models. We show that, in a certain regime, this quantum simulator yields an effective Hubbard Hamiltonian with tunable bond-charge interactions, a model studied in the context of strongly-correlated el...

A solenoidal synthetic field and the non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm effects in neutral atoms

Cold neutral atoms provide a versatile and controllable platform for emulating various quantum systems. Despite efforts to develop artificial gauge fields in these systems, realizing a unique ideal-solenoid-shaped magnetic field within the quantum domain in any real-world physical system remains elusive. Here we propose a scheme to generate a "hairline" solenoid with an extremely small size aro...

Atoms with Bosonic “Electrons” in Strong Magnetic Fields

We study the ground state properties of an atom with nuclear charge Z and N bosonic “electrons” in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field B. We investigate the mean field limit N →∞ with N/Z fixed, and identify three different asymptotic regions, according to B ¿ Z2, B ∼ Z2, and B À Z2. In Region 1 standard Hartree theory is applicable. Region 3 is described by a one-dimensional functiona...
